Autumn 2023
How useful is historical voting data for the present? To answer this question, I have developed a data analysis tool. The tool places voting data in the context of historical events that are important for Switzerland. It is clearly structured in terms of content and graphics, and presents the data using an evolving timeline. In addition, I show individual connections between history and politics, which serve as food for thought for the user.
For this data visualization application, I worked with P5.js, Javascript and HTML. I used Adobe XD for the first prototypes of the application and Tableau for the data analysis.
PROCESS
I had access to a database of historical voting data from Switzerland. A Survey showed that most people would like to have a reference book to be able to research the results of past votes and the context in which they took place, either for their own interest or because a similar vote was imminent. For this reason, I decided to present the historical voting data along with the past historical events, creating the design first as a sketch on paper and in a second step digitally as code. Halfway through the project, I fundamentally changed my design concept and decided to guide the user through the data with an evolving timeline and provide food for thought with individual pop-up highlights of what can be found in the app. At the end of the project, I had a working application that was completely built in code and had various filtering and navigation features.
