Spring 2022
How can data visualizations better correspond to the basic theme and create more emotions? In this project, I tried to visualize self-collected data from the Obergoms region on the topic of culture and landscape using local objects. The objects were scanned using photogrammetry and digitally processed in further steps until they represented abstract versions of bar charts.
For this project I used Metashape for the photogrammetry and Cinema4D and After Effects for the editing and production of the videos.
PROCESS
In the spring of 2022, I spent three weeks doing artistic field research in the Obergoms region of Valais, Switzerland. My goal was to explore the region by hiking and collecting analog data representative of the region, such as the number of statues of the Virgin Mary along the way or the distance surrounded by "unproductive" alpine land. The data collected should be categorized and each category presented in a bar graph. To create a stronger connection to the region and to make the work more emotional and interesting, I decided to create the bar charts with objects from Obergoms. I scanned the various objects and staged them using Cinema4d and After Effects. I also created a second layer that documented my hikes in the region and showed the locations where the data was found. Finally, I presented the two videos in an internal university exhibition using a screen and a projector.
